Christmas 2017

We had Christmas lunch at our house today. We started the day off with the kids: all seven of them, as Frederick and Cephas went out late last night to pick Nhan up from Mass. Anyhow, the older kids all wanted to sleep in today, but I wanted them to get up so that we could open gifts as a family and then I could start making lunch before our guests started to arrive. Thankfully, the only extra people we had here today was Frederick's mom, Sue, and my best friend, SheaLynn and her husband, JP. Since it was this group of people, the pressure was off to have everything perfect. It is more about the people and the conversation and the time than it is about having everything perfect. It's the way it should be, but sometimes when I have other people over, I tend to lose sight of that and stress out about everything that isn't perfect, or anything that could potentially be seen as not perfect by another person (which really means that I stress the whole entire time!) That wasn't the case today though. The meal was delayed, and the scalloped potatoes were slightly burnt on the top, but it all went perfectly fine! We ate when everything was done and the guys were back from the gas station (we had forgotten about getting drinks - we normally don't keep soda or SheaLynn's tea in the house, but since it was a holiday, we intended to have them.)

The kids ate lunch with us and then disappeared into the basement to play laptops and video games, which is fine, I suppose. I would prefer for them to be upstairs, even if they are on technology. It's a work in progress. They are used to being in the basement at their grandparents' house and playing games during family functions. This would be their dad's parents, by the way. And initially, we didn't allow them to have their laptops in the basement, so they would play their games up here. But then, I foolishly allowed them to have them downstairs, in the "teen hangout room/game room" which was a mistake to create for them in the first place. It is also something that we are remedying in the near future.

So they disappeared and we sat upstairs and visited and it was just really nice. Orion continued to open presents that he didn't get to before lunch. He truly appreciates each and every gift. After every present he opened, he just wanted to stop and play with that toy for a little while. As it is right now, it is nearing midnight on Christmas Night and he has one present left to open, although he has been asleep for almost three hours already. The gift he has yet to open also happens to be his "big" gift this year. It really is a big gift, both in terms of size and price. But he loves tractors so I talked Frederick into getting Orion a motorized tractor that he can use in the yard to do actual work with. It's a toy, but it's a toy that can also function as a tool. I'm excited to let him play on it tomorrow.

We live in the Plains and the weather here has been so warm up until a couple of days ago, when we had a cold front come in. Then on Thursday evening, a cold front came through and we got a very minor dusting of snow. Saturday, the day before Christmas Eve, it tried to snow early on, but didn't succeed, but as night fell, so did the snow and Christmas Eve morning, we woke up to at least 3 inches of snow on the ground. It has snowed off and on since then. Frederick was so happy, as he had wanted to have a White Christmas.

Christmas Eve morning, we went outside with the babies, as the big kids were all with their dad. Frederick shoveled the driveway and the sidewalk, and I pulled Arabella around our cul-de-sac in the infant sled, while Orion sometimes walked with us or stayed close to Frederick wanting to help him but unable to do so (mittens are not his friend). We got some great pictures of the kids out in the snow. They had such a good time!

Well, it's late, so I should end this so I can head on to bed myself. Merry Christmas, world!
